This mempo is another piece I did to learn on. A few parts of it aren’t quite historically accurate – the nose piece is riveted solidly on, there’s no attachment lugs, and the moustache is made out of wallaby fur as I didn’t have any hair they would of used historically in Japan, like horse hair. I was also restrained in that I only know of two mempos in New Zealand both a few feet behind glass, and so unable to be examined closely, in the Auckland War memorial museum and the Otago Museum.

Wikipedia on mempos

I’d really like to make another one sometime, and improve on my last attempt. I’d also really like to have a better look at a old mempo, but sadly there’s a scarcity of them on this side of the pacific.
